David Rowe is executive vice president of risk management in SunGard's capital markets and investment banking business. In this role, Mr. Rowe advises customers on risk management functionality and development priorities in their software applications. Prior to joining SunGard in 1999, Mr. Rowe was senior vice president in charge of the risk management information group at Bank of America in San Francisco
Context
David Rowe is a widely recognized expert in financial risk management. He has written a monthly column in Risk magazine since 1999 and writes a risk management blog at www.sungard.com. Mr. Rowe’s industry positions include board member of the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE), co-chairman of the Education and Standards Committee of the Professional Risk Managers' International Association (PRMIA), member of the editorial boards of the GARP Risk Review and The Journal of Operational Risk, and co-chairman of Risk Who's Who.
Commentary
With the final implementation of Basel II in Europe, attention will turn to risk technology issues that have been neglected due to lack of resources. A key example will be strengthening the infrastructure to allow the risk function to keep pace with the continued innovations in the front-office. Grid computing will become increasingly central to the task of keeping up with growth in volumes and complexity. While ideal for many risk management purposes, considerable restructuring of code will be required to obtain the full benefit of this technology
