Set within a private courtyard in the vibrancy of the city, the Brewery, a Grade II listed building and holder of a City Heritage Award can trace its heritage back some 250 years.
Production at the Chiswell Street, site of Samuel Whitbread’s brewery began in 1749, with 202,000 barrels of porter ale brewed per year at its height in 1796. However, the popularity of real ale declined steadily over the following two centuries, and brewing eventually ceased altogether in 1976. Whitbread’s sold off swathes of the five-acre City site, which has now become valuable real estate. Chiswell Street, however, remained the company’s corporate headquarters, nestling alongside new shops, offices and flats, while the rest became The Brewery events facility.
The venue’s largest event space is the Porter Tun, which housed the vats (tuns) in which the ale was stored. During its golden era, the huge room, then two storeys high (the floor was added later on), stored 1,640,000 pints of beer under its beamed roof. The exposed brickwork of the walls gives the space a raw, industrial look – as traditional as it is modern – with wooden floors throughout.
The Brewery’s smaller rooms have a charm all of their own. The basement Smeaton Vaults, where the copper-lined vats were kept, are the venue’s most atmospheric spaces, featuring the original elevated walkways, sloping floors (to allow sediment to collect) and copper piping.
Finally there are the rather stunning and aptly named Sugar Rooms, where the sugar for the fermentation process was once stored. Adjacent to the larger rooms and surely two of the most elegant breakout spaces in town, the Upper and Lower Sugar Rooms overlook the cobbled courtyard, and are flooded with light from a row of long Georgian windows.
